John MacLean is a Director at IEQ Capital, where he advises ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families on investment strategy and wealth planning. With nearly a decade of experience, he specializes in designing and implementing customized portfolios that reflect unique clients’ goals, incorporating a strategic mix of public and private investments, and reviewing allocations for alignment and risk management.
In addition to his direct client service, Mr. MacLean plays a leadership role in due diligence within the venture capital secondaries market. In this capacity, he evaluates fund structures, track records, valuation methodologies, and liquidity dynamics, with a focus on identifying opportunities that may offer clients differentiated exposure to venture-backed growth companies. He also regularly conducts due diligence on early-stage opportunities sourced through client networks.
Prior to joining IEQ Capital in 2022, Mr. MacLean began his career in the Portfolio Management Group at Hall Capital Partners, where he provided investment advice to wealthy individuals, families, and institutions.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. MacLean serves on the Grants Committee of the Olympic Club Foundation, which supports Bay Area youth participation in amateur athletics. He is also a member of The Guardsmen, a San Francisco-based philanthropic organization that provides scholarships, camperships, and other programs for at-risk youth.
Mr. MacLean earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, with citations in Psychology and Spanish, from Harvard University, where he was a member of the Division I baseball team.
