Barron’s advisor rankings formula utilizes three major categories of calculations: (1) Assets (2) Revenue and (3) Quality of practice. Advisors who wish to be ranked fill out a 102-question survey about their practice. Barron’s verifies that data with the advisors’ firms and with regulatory databases and then applies their rankings formula to the data to generate a ranking. The scoring system assigns a top score of 100 and rates the rest by comparing them with the winner. This ranking does not guarantee any potential investment outcomes, nor does it rank advisors based on investment performance. There is no fee for participation. However, IEQ does pay for the right to be featured in Barron’s magazine itself (outside of the ranking) and for using Barron’s logo in our marketing pieces. The rankings are based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. Those advisors that are considered have a minimum of seven years’ experience, and the algorithm weighs factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and those that encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criterion due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. Neither Forbes nor SHOOK receive a fee in exchange for rankings.
